Our luck continued on Monday - still beautiful, still no smoke. Last year it was very hot when we camped, but this year the high was only about 80 degrees - perfect weather. We had our usual breakfast of oatmeal cups, fruit, and coffee, and set off to hike the long way (3.5 miles) around the lake to the resort. Liesl wanted pancakes for a second breakfast.
There were sadly no pancakes available (cook was sick and had left early), so we consoled ourselves with a cinnamon roll and kept walking back to our campsite. After lazing and lunching, we went back out on the water, for hours. We circumnavigated the entire lake, poking in and out of coves and enjoying the sunshine. Liesl tied her paddleboard to the back of my kayak and I towed her for part of the way
Leetle too much sun and not enough sunscreen on my legs. Eep. Bad mama.
Liesl was dead set on catching a fish. She had one of our camping cups and tried for a solid hour, maybe more, to catch one of the little suckers as it swam by. So much focus and patience! She was a little bummed by her failure as a fisherman, but I think the problem was in the equipment.
Jasper was exhausted by his morning of walking and swimming, and found a shady patch to nap.
We returned to our campsite in the late afternoon and had an early dinner (black bean and avocado quesadillas). At 7:30, we headed back out onto the water to catch the diving birds and the sunset.
A group of four teenagers arrived late to the campsite across from us -- they were supposed to be in Bend, but it was too full of wildfire smoke. We enjoyed (in a schadenfreude kind of way) explaining to them how the water pump worked and where it was located. I recommended they rent kayaks from the resort. One of the boys had a ukelele and in the evening he played and sang, really well, which was unexpected and delightful.
