Thanksgiving 2013

We hosted our first holiday feast this year and had a wonderful time. Along with the Averys, our friends Mary, Patrick, and Rowan came to dinner, so we were 13. With the exception of a slight turkey mishap (damn things were frozen in the middle), everything went beautifully.

We had two 8 lb turkeys (local, organic, heirloom, blah blah. :) ) with gravy, and a ham.  Kim mostly took charge of the brining and cooking of the turkeys and the making of gravy, and they were delicious. I made a kale salad with fennel, coconut, pepitas, currants, and pears; butternut squash with tahini sauce; wild rice with mushrooms, hazelnuts, and cranberries, brussels sprouts with bacon; and purple cabbage with beets, apple, and pickled raisins. I also made two breads - pumpkin with chocolate chips and cranberry pecan. Mom made two beautiful apple pies, and Mary made cranberry sauce, a pumpkin pie, and a banana cream pie. And finally, Steve brought in three pints of ice cream from Salt & Straw (pumpkin and pecan, sweet potato and chevre, and salted caramel).

the kids' table! a huge success. :)

Children's Museum!

We took the children to the Portland Children's Museum on Wednesday and had a wonderful time. They played in the theatre, in the water room, with the babies, and ended up in the clay studio and "garage" studio.

Blue Star doughnuts. Yum!

We took everyone to Blue Star doughnut shop on Tuesday morning. I think the pictures tell the story pretty well. :)
