Ten years!

Steve and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary today! We were married on the Monday of Labor Day weekend at the gazebo in Peninsula Park's Rose Garden; our dinner reception was at the (sadly departed) restaurant Fife. It was our 'destination' wedding, as at that point we didn't know a single person who lived in Portland. We had just visited for the first time in March and fell in love with the city and the state - Steve bought my engagement ring from the vintage jeweler Gilt on NW 23rd Ave - we got engaged at a waterfall hike near the coast - it seemed like a great place to get married and to move to someday. And it was, and it has been.

We had a babysitter come at 4 and went first to Gilt for some anniversary shopping. I got a lovely necklace with seed pearls and a green peridot stone. And then we had a delicious dinner at Aviary, an Asian-inflected restaurant on NE Alberta St. - silken tofu, miso eggplant, pork belly, raw kanpachi, crispy pig ear over coconut rice, and beef short ribs. It was fantastic. We strolled over to Salt & Straw and tasted their new September flavors (orange olive oil! apple pie! rocky road!), and then came home with some pints. (In our absence, there was an enormous thunderstorm and the power blinked out. The stove had to be lighted with the emergency matches - although our babysitter noted that the kids declared their willingness to eat the mac and cheese cold, if necessary. And then Liesl took a shower by flashlight - obviously a huge hit - and they told scary ghost stories for tuck-in. Love it.)

Tomorrow morning we leave for a weekend in Newport - coastal hikes, beach-combing, and fresh seafood await. I'm excited, and happy to be celebrating with Steve and our children.
