pumpkin carving

Liesl and Arianna carved their pumpkins on Wednesday -- it was A's first time, and she did a great job of scooping all the pumpkin guts and separating out the seeds (for roasting!).

We ran out of time, but finally today finished up -- Liesl made a fun party pumpkin, happy-faced and with a disco ball light inside.

NB: Arianna was at her dad's all weekend, so we didn't get to carve the face in her pumpkin. But she'll be back tomorrow and then I'll update! Update: Fred the toddler.

Liesl's treehouse (drawing)

Liesl drew a treehouse and then told me all about it, and I wish we could have such an amazing place.

She and Arianna captured a wooly bear caterpillar and built it an elaborate habitat, and then kept it fed and watered for over a week. And then it was released back into the wild, still alive! (phew)

Liesl's elementary school has library day every Friday -- the librarians stand outside with bags of books designated K-2 or 3-5, filled with an assortment of fiction, nonfiction, chapter books, graphic novels, and picture books. You show up and grab a bag, and hope for the best! This week's bag was a winner: L didn't make it past our front steps before starting on one of the books (a graphic novel sequel).

More school work: a drawing of herself as scientist (I think) and an acrostic poem.

A drawing of a puppy drawing a picture of a puppy drawing.... So delightful.

Topaz pumpkin farm

Liesl, Arianna, and I went to a local farm on Sunday afternoon to pick some pumpkins and explore a corn maze. We headed out to Sauvie Island, and the (formerly known as Kruger's Farm) Topaz Farm. It turned out to be a gorgeous, sunny afternoon, perfect for an outdoor adventure. We got tons of pumpkins in various sizes, colors, and degrees of wartiness; we managed to find all ten stations in the goat-themed corn maze; and the girls got caramel apples and ice cream to celebrate.

baseball game!

After the cancellation of the entire spring travel season because of Covid, and summer ball too, and then a delay in starting this fall because of field space/permitting issues, and then wildfire smoke and rainouts, Seb played a baseball game this Saturday. A 6-inning friendly scrimmage against another local team. He pitched two innings - his first inning was fabulous, 9 pitches, 3 up 3 down. He came up to bat four times and got three hits and a walk. And he had a great catch from shortstop (high pop fly just outside the infield). It was a pretty sweet day of baseball.

I love the knickers. Shades of Grandpa.

It was a beautiful October day for baseball, and nice to sit on the sidelines and see some familiar faces. They asked the parents/fans to space out and to stay pretty far from the dugout, which is why these photos are not very good.

gokart racing

Sebastian's friend Omri celebrated his birthday on Thursday with a go-kart racing party at Sykart in Tigard. Seb had never driven anything before, and he (along with his friends) was very tentative and terrible for the first few laps. But then they got the hang of it and it was so fun to see them getting better and faster at the turns. Seb loved it, as expected, and that was fun to see. They got two races, 14-15 laps per race, and that was enough for a day. I think we'll be back!
