first week

We have survived - mostly even thrived - during our first week of social distancing. The weather in Portland cooperated, with sunny skies and 60 degree afternoons all week. We are not yet on total lockdown here, so the kids played outside with a few friends. We went for walks around the neighborhood and played baseball together at the field; we biked on the Rock Creek trail and played frisbee golf (an unofficial course).

Some local families have collaborated together on a FB rock painting and hiding and finding group, so our local walks have become very entertaining as we try to find hidden painted rocks on all the trails. We plan to paint some here and contribute to the stock.

The kids unpacked all of the Legos they could find and spent hours re-constructing buildings and vehicles that had fallen apart and creating new ones from scratch. They read books, they watched movies and tv, they played some video games. I convinced each to accomplish a little bit of math work each day and a variety of writing assignments (emails, daily journals, responding to news articles).

Liesl watched more of the Lunchtime Doodles with Mo Willems series and made some fun drawings of Piggie and Elephant. She and I did a couple of workout apps - core, arms, legs - together, which was fun (and made her a little sore the next day!)

I think Jasper continues to think that this semi-quarantine thing is the best thing that has ever happened to him. Walks with his people morning, noon, and night, and children around to play with all day long.
