Sebastian's soccer team had a Sunday game at 12 noon in Bend, 3+ hours away. (They had a Saturday game in Ridgefield, Washington the day before - ridiculous scheduling.) Liesl had soccer games both Saturday and Sunday, and a baseball game on Saturday. So I committed to taking Sebastian, and then one of his teammates joined, and then another teammate plus his mom (my friend Amy), and suddenly it was a road tripping party. The weather forecast was for snow across the mountain passes, so I rented a giant SUV and a hotel room in Bend.
We left on Saturday afternoon and had an easy and fun and beautiful ride down. After checking into the hotel, I introduced Amy and the boys to the joys of eating at Spork. The food at Spork was really the reason I was willing to drive 7 hours for a single soccer match. (Kind of, sort of, not really, but maybe with a grain of truth.) And then the boys demanded frozen yogurt, and then they went swimming in the hotel pool at 10 pm. It was pretty crazy.
On Sunday we went out for giant-sized pancakes and then left the boys to watch tv while we walked 4 miles along the Deschutes River trail. And then there was the game - the boys played well and ran hard, and the score was 2-2 until the last 10 minutes. But then they just got tired, from the altitude, from playing with only one sub, from either driving down that morning (a minivan brought 7 players) or short sleep the night before. And so they ended up losing 4-2.
We picked up sandwiches and coffee and hit the road, all the way back home. The drive home was noticeably less fun for everyone, but we made it safely.
