Happy New Year! We woke up on January 1st to find still more snow on the ground, to the children's great delight. They were dressed in their snow gear by 7:30 and out at first light. Sebastian received a mini snowboard for Christmas from his Raab grandparents and he was so excited to try it out. He was astonishingly adept on his first try - had no trouble at all keeping his balance and making his way down the hill. I have painful memories of my first and only time on a snowboard, in college - there were bruises upon bruises.
Unlike the snow before Christmas, this was wet and sticky, perfect for making snowmen and snow monsters. We made four big snowmen and Steve made a little monster, in the mode of Calvin & Hobbes.
After lunch, Sebastian and I went for a long walk in the sunshine, enjoying the snow dappling the plants and trees along the local trails. He was the one to notice the pattern of snow and ferns on the hillside opposite us - he pointed out to me how beautiful it was, and asked me to take a picture. I was so pleased that he noticed.
Lilly came over at 4 and Steve and I went out for a New Year's day date - dinner at a new small plates place called Superbite and then a private climbing party at PG with many of our friends. We had the whole place to ourselves and got to climb and talk and laugh for a few hours, and then we headed for drinks at Henry's Tavern. It was a really fun evening - both to have a delicious dinner with Steve and then to catch up with my friends. Yay for 2017! Off to a good start.
