Portland was forecasted to be in the high 90s today, so we decided to get out of town. We dropped poor Steve off at work and drove to the coast. Our first stop was Ecola State Park, a gorgeous forest overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Haystack Rock. We had a lovely little hike along a steep cliff, with Cannon Beach ahead of us. The kids delighted in getting muddy, jumping over roots, and investigating trees and mushrooms and moss and wildflowers.

After that we drove down to the beach and met up with our friends Katie and Ben, and Jillian and David. Surprisingly, unexpectedly, it turned very cloudy and with the wind gusting off the ocean, cold. Like, I sat with a blanket wrapped around myself cold. The kids didn't seem to notice, however, digging in the sand, throwing balls and frisbees, chasing each other, making sand ice cream, and getting buried. Ben brought an enormous shovel with which he constructed huge pits and huge piles for the kids to climb into and dive on top of. It was great.
We headed home at 3 in order to let Liesl have a nap and get dinner together - wild Coho salmon, yum - a very successful little day.
