While the boys were enjoying F1, Liesl and I stayed in Barcelona and had our own adventures. We began at the Picasso museum. It was small but had a lovely collection of his early works and some excellent rooms showcasing the development of important pieces.
This wall had black and white photographs of hundreds of Picasso's works -- a catalog created to help him sort and donate. The museum takes up 3-4 interlinked old buildings. This is Picasso's reinterpretation of Velazquez's Las Meninas, in his cubist style. There was a room full of his rough drafts and sketches which was very cool - you could see him playing and experimenting with lines, colors, and placement.
Another room had various developmental works from a painting of his studio view, with pigeons. Again, fascinating to see his artistic mind playing around.
Liesl said, of the above painting, "It looks like a dumpling, an xlb, and I want to eat it." Of the series of sketches below, she said "I could do those."
This painting reminded us both of Grammy Avery's work.
After Picasso we did some shopping, ate lunch, enjoyed scoops of gelato, and visited a candy store. The cured tuna here is pretty tasty - best sandwiches.
We returned to our rooms for an hour or two to nap/rest/drink water, and then headed to Gaudi's Park Guell. More of his signature organic forms, a lot of colorful tiles, and some great city views.
We sat for 20 minutes and watched hordes of people approach this famous lizard sculpture -- everyone posed and took basically the same photo, dozens of people got told off by a security guard for sitting on the edges (that was the sole job of this one poor man!), and it made for great people-watching.

We walked and took the train back to Plaza Catalunya and our hotel, picked up poke bowls to go, and got cozy inside.
