Liesl has played softball every spring with the same group of local girls (a core group, with others coming and going) for five years. Their first season was in 2021, when school was still not in session and we were all coming out of Covid isolation, and most of the girls had never played softball/baseball before. A group of parents (including me) decided to resuscitate the local little league organziation that had faded away. Our first year, we knew nothing; we re-used ancient jerseys, guessed at equipment needs, and had almost no games because we didn't know when the D4 scheduling meeting occurred. But we got better! The board, and especially the girls.
They played their final game together on Saturday afternoon -- they're off to different high schools, and some may not continue with softball. All of us from the old board are also now done with our service, but we've grown from our initial year with one team to five teams at different age brackets and a robust board.
Saturday was hot, but they won convincingly, and then there were some sweet coach speeches and gifts and photos. Liesl played first base all season because she is a really, really reliable catcher of the ball. She'll jump, stretch, do the splits, etc. to make sure she catches it. She had a good season at the plate too, getting some hits, stealing a lot of bases.
