We had a good morning at the hotel -- I ran on the treadmill, we played in the gorgeous swimming pool, Steve went in the steam room and sauna. And then we took off for the Mercedes Benz museum, which surprised and delighted us. It was a really beautiful building and a well-done series of exhibits on industrialization and cultural changes in the last 150 years. Great photos, great exhibits, both old and new Mercedes Benz cars to admire, including some famous race cars, and as a side benefit, contemporary art hanging on the walls.
And then we hit the road for a 5-hour drive to Alpbach, Austria, in the Alps. We stopped for lunch in Ulm but otherwise drove and drove. The scenery became really spectacular; the roads become somewhat narrow and twisty. Steve had chosen what appeared to be a very scenic route, but there was one toll road in particular that was not wide enough for two cars to pass -- playing chicken with approaching cars around sharp corners was mildly terrifying. We dipped in and out of Germany and Austria as we drove, seeing many scenic ski towns and wonderful bike trails. We arrived in Alpbach at 6:45, tired and achy and a little motion sick. But it's beautiful here, and we'll be here for three days.
