We woke up slowly and took our time getting up and out of our rooms. Liesl and I were hoping for a beach day, but it was entirely foggy and socked in -- couldn't even see the ocean from our window. So we lazed around and ate a leisurely breakfast, and waited. At noon, just as we were checking out, the sun emerged, so we drove a short distance down the coast to a sandy beach.
We enjoyed an absolutely wonderful couple of hours wading in the water, jumping the waves, dodging the huge breaks, and laughing together in the sunshine. The tide was coming in, the dropoff was a bit steep, and the waves were high -- we were slightly intimidated. But I can see why the Portuguese coast draws tourists in the summer.

Liesl and I climbed, very wet and sandy, into the car, and we drove the 40 minutes to Lisbon in order to return our car rental. We took the metro a few stops and walked a few blocks to our hotel -- it was hot, and we had all of our stuff, so it was definitely a little less fun.
It felt good to shower off the sand and enjoy the air conditioning for a bit, but then we ventured out to find dinner and see the main square in the cool of the evening. The evening light in Lisboa is beautiful -- reminds me a little of Rome in its warmth and color.
Steve and I enjoyed the wine bar on the first floor of our apartment hotel, and then we went out for middle-eastern food, which was a nice change.
