Wednesday was our first day exploring the town of Kona — everyone wanted to buy some souvenirs and jewelry and some festive clothing for the upcoming luau. We got Hawaiian shirts for the menfolk, matching dresses for Liesl and Roxy, an awesome shorts outfit for Dani, koa wood and bone necklaces, swimsuits and trunks and t-shirts and dresses. Everyone got in on the action, and then we had lunch outside, perched on the seawall overlooking the bay in downtown Kona. (In keeping with Covid times, especially in light of the omicron variant’s exponential contagiousness and the fact that mom, dad, and Jean needed a negative test to reenter Canada, we avoided restaurants almost entirely during the trip. We cooked many dinners, taking turns, and we ate a lot of takeout meals in various parks and beaches.)

After lunch, Carl, Kim, and the girls stayed behind in Kona to snorkel in the little bay and beach area —the water was super calm and there were abundant fish to be seen even when standing in the shallows. The rest of us drove up into the hills to visit a couple of coffee farms. Buddha’s Cup was the most magical farm and tasting room, with panoramic views overlooking the ocean, roosters roaming the grounds, avocado trees plump with fruit, and the sweetest woman offering tastings of delicious coffee, macadamia nuts, rum cake, and chocolate-coffee-covered mac nuts. We stopped by another coffee farm and tasted a bit of their brew, and then headed home.
After dinner, Seb and I threw a frisbee on our back lawn, and then crept across the shrubbery to the 10th fairway of the golf course.
