camping at Cape Perpetua

We went camping at Cape Perpetua this past weekend, on the Oregon coast near Yachats. It was gorgeous - good weather and a sweet little campground within walking distance of the coves, sandy beach, tidepools, old-growth forest hikes, and imaginatively named spouts and churns. The children were happy to be out of school and free to run around the trails and in the creeks, and to roast s'mores and hot dogs and breakfast bagels over our fire. Sadly, Steve couldn't join us - too many work obligations to take care of before our big trip East in a week. We missed him.
The creek behind our campsite. The gurgle of the water was lovely to hear, and the kids had fun wading upstream in it.
Seb, Liesl, and I managed to set up our tent by ourselves! Woo-hoo!
 Climbing trees, exploring foxgloves.
Roasting marshmallows for s'mores. Serious work.
A few hours later, another fire, this time roasting apples, bagels, and bananas for breakfast. :)
A giant, 500-year old spruce tree in our campground.
Cape Cove and its beaches, tidepools, spouting churns.
Classic Avery family drip castles.

A misty, cool Sunday morning at our campsite. We had hot chocolate for breakfast.
We hiked from the campground up to the top of the hill overlooking Cape Perpetua - short but steep! The wildflowers were in bloom and the coast was stunning.
 Sebastian at the overlook.
The sky cleared and the sun came out and everyone's thoughts turned back to the beach, and one last dip before the end. So we ran down the hill, packed up our tents and supplies, and splashed/swam/waded/dug in the sand for another hour before driving back to Portland.
Liesl gathered her courage and dunked herself eight times - the water was not freezing, but it was 60 degrees and a stiff wind was blowing off the Pacific. It was pretty brave. We rewarded ourselves with some pastries in Yachats before leaving town - such a good trip. The kids had a great time, and even Sebastian was enthusiastic about the experience of camping - woo-hoo! It's a first!
