Sunday on the Metolius

Liesl and I woke up early and got ourselves fed, packed, and out the door by 8. Our planned destination: Black Butte, a cinder cone volcano which is just outside of Sisters. You can drive partway up and then hike 2 miles to the top for awesome views of all the surrounding peaks. Unfortunately, we found that the gravel road to the trailhead was still covered in snow and ice; we drove over the first few patches, but when it became clear that the last 3.5 miles (just to the trailhead) would be entirely snow/ice, I turned around. I didn't want us to get stuck in slush or stranded on a hillside miles from anywhere or anyone, out of cellphone range. Plus the trail was likely to be similarly snowy, and we weren't prepared for that.

It was a bit of a disappointment, but we rallied and instead went for a stroll along the Metolius River, near Camp Sherman. It was still a beautiful morning and the river burbles along next to a flat path for miles. There are many big trees reaching out over the water, all of which we went out on to test our balance and throw pinecones and sticks into the water. We walked 3-4 miles and then drove home, satisfied with our weekend adventure.

This treecut looked like a mini city!
We came home to three happy boys and a clean house (no dirty dishes! floor swept! clean sheets!). It's good to be home.
